Sponsor | jamiet | Apr 13, 6:51am | Can anybody here open .docx files ( Word 2007 ), I know there is a reader for it, but it will take me too long to download it on my dial-up connection. I just need to get a file converted to .doc , or .rtf . It's regarding my cousin Todd Daniels ( todddaniels.blogspot.com [todddaniels.blogspot.com] ). If you can open .docx files, I was wondering if I could e-mail it, then you can open it, then save it as a different file format.
Thanks.

| Sponsor | jamiet | Apr 13, 7:05am | Thanks Lerryn. I tried it earlier this morning, and it didn't work, I kept getting an error message ( Invalid target file format, please try another format. ). I just tried it again, and it worked.
Oddly enough, I went back an tried it again, to try saving it as a different file format, and got the error message again. I haven't received the e-mail link yet, from when it said it worked, so I don't know if it's a success, or not.
BTW, has anyone tried the writer tolls extension for Open Office? I have to update to the current version of OO before I give it a try. |

another online converter!
zamzar.com [zamzar.com]
The Docx-converter Dashboard Widget allows you to convert files right from your Desktop. Simply drag the .docx file you want to convert into the drop area of the widget and the widget will automatically convert the file and save it to the location of the original file

Microsoft Compatibility Pack will take too long to download on my dial-up connection. Although I may try to download it later, when I am not using the internet for other purposes.
Isn't the widget only for Mac users? I thought it said so somewhere on the page.
I forgot about zamzar.com [zamzar.com] , I gave it a try in FireFox, and it didn't work ( I enabled javascript, etc... ), and it didn't work ( I didn't even get the "File upload complete. Your file has succesfully finished uploading !" message ). I tried it in IE, and I did get the file upload complete message, am now waiting for the e-mail to see if it worked. I'll post back here when I get it. |

| Sponsor | jamiet | Apr 13, 8:04am | *EDIT*: Zamzar worked! It just takes a while to get the e-mail. Thanks Lerryn.
For all I know, the file that Todd's Mom sent me, is corrupted in some way.
I can't remember if the newest version of Open Office can open .docx files, or if it requires the writers tools extension. My version of OO is 2.0, and it wouldn't even open the writers tool extension.
So far, I haven't received the e-mail link from zamzar, if it doesn't work, I'll just download the compatibility pack. |
